O Say ...

There are some things I don't care about. Pros playing Olympic basketball is one of them. People taking 2:30 to sing a one minute song is another. But damned if Nike didn't make me just watch that whole thing.

How 'bout we play the Marvin Gaye version every time we win a medal? Or just all the time. That and Jimi Hendrix would work for me.

Bigger, direct version because YouTube's being a bit slow ...

I vividly remember this. I also remember the letters section in the LA Times that weekend with readers highly critical of Gaye because he didn't treat the song with the solemnity it deserves.

Marvin Gaye was one of my favorites. I went to a Lakers game not long after he died and they played a recording of this performance and I was in tears--such a beautiful, soulful voice. I remember that night much more than the anger I felt reading those letters. Thanks for posting this, Will.
