'American Idol' breakdown: Is Chris Daughtry the new Roy Jones?
2006-05-11 15:35
by Scott Long

Regular Juice readers realize that I've been known to take shots at American Idol from time to time. I've been silent on the show this year, as this is the first season of AI that I've actually felt compelled to consistently watch past the Gong Show episodes that begin each year. This year has had the best depth and diversity, with five or six singers possessing real talent.

From the beginning of this season, Chris Daughtry has been the star of the show. He has one of the best rock singer voices I have ever heard, despite his often bad choices in musical selection. It seemed like a Bush Administration (my new way of saying no-brainer) that he would be in the finals, but last night Daughtry was dumped. I bet even Last Comic Standing winner Dat Phan was shocked. I can just imagine the "hilarious" routine Phan has written about the decision, with his mom saying, "What you mean, Chris Daughtry lose to that girl?"

Watching Daughtry and Katherine McPhee's faces after the announcement reminded me of Roy Jones Jr. being screwed in the 1988 Olympic boxing finals. I was waiting for the shocked McPhee to lift Daughtry's arm up in celebration of the true champion, like the South Korean fighter did for Jones.

McPhee is a gorgeous young woman who the camera loves, but she is at best a broadway musical type singer, not a pop star. Seventeen-year-old Paris Bennett was the best female vocalist on the show this season. Bennett reminds me of an NBA draft choice who might have come out one year too early, as she could have used more maturity. I wouldn't be surprised, though, if she ends up having the longest career of this year's contestants.

Outside of McPhee, the other two singers left are Taylor Hicks and Elliott Yamin. Hicks has a good personality and does a fair Michael McDonald impersonation, but his career will follow Clay Aiken's, performing for 50-year-old women at State Fairs. Not a bad thing, overall, but not what American Idol is seeking in its champion.

Lost in the Daughtry controversy has been that Yamin has gotten better and better each week to the point where I think he's had the best performances the past three weeks. While I don't think he has the kind of fanbase to win the competition, he has been the most versatile singer on the show. His vocal style has a Donnie-Hathaway-meets-the-Rat-Pack sensibility, which, properly marketed, could make him the Jaime Cullum of the U.S. If Yamin wins or not, it's his CD I would buy first from the 2006 American Idol show.

A final note on Daughtry. By losing a fight he so obviously should have won, Roy Jones, Jr. came out of the 1988 Olympics a bigger star than if he had won Gold. I would think that being crowned American Idol champion would have been a negative in regards to obtaining street cred in the rock world, so this is blessing. Being mentioned in the same breath as Fantasia or Carrie Underwood is not exactly going to create instant comraderie backstage at Ozzfest.

I will be interested to hear Daughtry's first album, as he's someone who could go either way. His instincts seem to go more towards the Nickelback world, which might sell records, but is music for the messes. When he explores his Ed Kowalczyk side (Live's lead singer), Daughtry has more substance. It will be vital for him to pick the right producer (See: Rick Rubin) who can help him stay away from AOR-balladeer that many will push him towards. Sure he's got a great voice, but so do singers in bands like Train, Goo Goo Dolls, and Tonic. It's the songwriting for him that will make the difference between rock stardom and opening for Poison at the Burlington Steamboat Days in 2010.

I've always thought Chris was the guy who needed to win this contest the least - the guy who was the kind of singer that just needed the show as a launching pad, but not the victory. I was surprised he went out this early, though.

That being said - and I'll memory-drop here, in that I was ringside at the famous Jones fight in Seoul, working as a gopher for NBC - beyond perhaps the relative shock, there is no comparison between the two. Jones destroyed that other fighter. Chris is good, probably better than Katherine on Tuesday but not dramatically so. I think Katherine can be a pop star, not that I really understand the term, but she just needs to be less self-aware when she sings. She has the voice - she just needs more comfort on stage. And better clothes.

I definitely agree with you about Daughtry's first album, Scott. Something I'm interested to hear, but worried about whether it will have any substance. In the rock world, the voice really is secondary to the songwriting.

I have to say that his music selections over the weeks don't inspire confidence that he'll head down that route. He says LIVE is his favorite band, and you're right; they're a band he should try to emulate -- producing rock songs with lots of substance. Unfortunately, LIVE hasn't exactly been selling tons of albums lately, either, so what do I know?

I agree with you that Jon that RJJ was a lot more dominant in his competition than CD was in his. I was more focused on the shock of the moment, though, as Daughtry was so much superior to KM. I completely agree on the clothes, as I've only liked a couple of the outfits she has worn. She needs to raid Jessica Simpson's wardrobe for a more jiggly-friendly outfit.

I agree with Jon, Chris needed to win Idol the least. But really though....I think to say he was "so much superior" to Katharine....well, that certainly wasn't my opinion. Katharine really nails it sometimes, and stumbles sometimes, and this week was one of her worst. But there was nothing in either of Chris's songs that even caught my attention this week. A Little Less Conversation was about as limp as could be, until the last 15 seconds or so, and Suspicious Minds....ehhhhhh.....FWIW, I thought Katharine's Can't Help Falling in Love was bad, but I enjoyed her other one. Honestly, I've found this year more than any other that a lot of times, it's just a matter of personal opinion....which is why it's tough for me to hear you say he was so much superior....cause that's just not what I heard.
And by the way, I love the NBA/Paris analogy....that is dead on....and I agree too that I think she'll have a longer career than anyone else from this season.

Ugghh...maybe they think controversy is part of the total marketing package. Of course I don't even know how it works because I can't watch this show as this is my big soapbox issue - MUSIC IS NOT AND SHOULD NOT BE A CONTEST (unless it's high school band day, of course).

Hillarious. Guy goes on a show and get knocked off, then bad mouths the winner. Maybe it's time to take the hint.

Not only was Daughtry the one who needed to win the least, he probably would be in a worse situation had he actually won. It's my understanding that now he is not obligated to make pop records for Simon Cowell's production company, and really he's a lot more marketable if he can hook up with an existing band like Creed or Fuel or whatever one-word rock band bids the most for him. He has a stage presence, which is something most Idol competitors (including last year's winner) don't really have.

The shock was he went home on a week when McPhee completely tanked, but in hindsight it appeared Katharine (and Elliot) have been saved by absorbing fans of recent dismissals like Paris and Kellie Pickler. I can't imagine Daughtry picking up more fans as the show went on – you liked him or you didn't - which meant he was going to lose at some point.

Um. Scott, you've obviously made a mistake-- Cowboy Troy is playing Burlington Steamboat Days. It must be a good gig.

It doesn't look like it's only the winners that are tied up. (Then again, Aiken did manage to get out of the contract.)

People will sell their mind, body, and soul for a chance to fulfill their aspirations. Signing an exclusive contract like that is a sign-o-the-times.

As for Roy Jones Jr being compared in any way to this rocker......... In some circles... many circles, this rocker would have lost to the hottie. In no world does Jones lose to the Korean. He lost because he was too good, because the humans recording the bout couldn't keep up with his pace, forcing the computer to discard many of their inputs. There was no subjectivity at all. It was a pure man v man v machine gaffe of the highest order.

My memory doesn't seem to jibe with the internet. I seem to remember there was a new scoring system, that counted the number of blows by the judges, so that if two of the three judges recorded a hit within one second, then it counted as a hit. And I seem to remember that his punches came in such flurries that the judges couldn't keep up, etc.

But, I'm reading that it was more likely that it was corruption.

I gotta read some more. I'd hate to think I'm already losing it.

I definitely lost it. The scoring system I'm describing was brought in because of the Jones fiasco.

There was no excuse in the judging of the Jones fight other than corruption. Anyone with any functioning mental capacity whatsoever could tell Jones won that fight. That was one of the most thorough whippings I've ever seen in an Olympic boxing match.

I'm coming from a completely different point of view. First, I love Clay Aiken and am no where near 50 years old. Although I agree that Chris has a nice voice, I don't agree that it's better than Katherine's. Chris sounded very conceited when he was interviewed after the show and said he didn't think he would be out even a little bit and he thought it would definitely be Katherine. How dare him think he's so superior to the other 3 contestants. I would not buy a chris daughtry cd, but would definitely purchase one of Taylors or Katherines. In my opinion he was third in line and not very humble at all.

Sorry, the closest I can come to fighting comparisons is that while Elliott may have the body of a bantam weight he has the voice and heart of a heavy.

And he is just beginning. An inner city kid, with diabetes, 90% deaf in one ear is growing right before our eyes and ears. He, with the right backing, can become a classic. His isn't the first CD I will buy, his will be the only one - and I can't wait.

Tangotiger -

After some time passed, what man at the Jones fight suspected was revealed: it was fixed. There was a vote exchange among some judges to favor certain countries. The punch stats by NBC favored Jones inordinately. I've got pictures of the count-a-punch guys with their printout.

Chris, the new Roy Jones?? I don't know about that, but he is a great rocker though! Elliot's got a future in his genre of music and Taylor certainly has a future in his too.
Comment about Clay Aiken; way off base-apparently, Scott, you have never been to any of Clay's concerts because he has fans of all ages. He is the genuine entertainer; these up-coming stars could learn a thing or two from Mr.Aiken! Truly remarkable to see on stage! I am no where near 50 either nor male, don't let the name fool you!

Are you all nuts? I've (unfortunately) watched most of the AI episodes ever and it's my opinion that Bo Vice can't hold a candle to Chris Daughtry who can't hold a candle to Taylor Hicks.
Do some illegal downloading and listen to Taylor sing "Georgia". He pulls it off. I'd like to see any idol try to pull off a Ray Charles/Willie Nelson song.
Chris is good. No, he's great. But he ain't no Taylor. (too contrived)

Jeff Iannucci:

I thought you had it for a second. You dropped the ball, mate.
It doesn't matter whether or not Chris was the best singer. We all want a story. Taylor's a better performer. (watch Chris with the mic stand.....it's awkward and contrived)
Taylor's a real man, a workingman (if you will excuse the Grateful Dead reference) who enjoys performing and is not worried about camera placement.
Not to say that Chris is (or was) but I'll be damned if I can call Kathy McPhee a winner after this show.
She sux.....that's right, boys, with an 'x.'
